Flagship Bank and Trust Company opened for business on December 27, 1987. Situated in Central Massachusetts, Flagship was the first new bank to have opened in the Worcester area in 35 years. Flagship Bank is a division of People's United Bank, a federally-chartered savings bank with approximately $20 billion in assets and 300 branches in Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine and New York.

As a full service community bank, Flagship Bank has focused its resources on the business, residential mortgage and the trust investment needs of its community. The bank currently has eight branches: five in Worcester and one each in Leominster, Shrewsbury and Westborough. At this time the bank has approximately 140 employees. Flagship has developed a well-deserved reputation as an innovator within the financial community, resulting in many awards for both its programs and employees.

The bank's efforts were recognized by the Worcester County Bar Association with an award recognizing its IOLTA program (Interest on Lawyers Trust Account).

Flagship is seriously committed to its community as evidenced by the “Outstanding” Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) rating it has received every year from federal regulators. The bank has been awarded the Golden Coin Award by the Bank Marketing Association. Flagship has also received the Corporate Award from the Worcester Chapter of the National Conference (formerly known as the National Conference of Christians and Jews) and the Community Leadership Award from Centro Las Americas and the Torch Award from the Better Business Journal.
